Exhibition Time!

23 Jun

I’ve been more proactive this year in applying for exhibitions and trying to get my work seen by a wider audience, and although it costs to submit work, so far it seems to be paying off as I have three events coming up in the next few months!

I’ll be showing three pieces of work at next weeks’ Royal Norfolk Show, 28th and 29th of June, this is my third year of taking part and as I sold both works last year I have been invited to submit three this time… On show will be my latest etching of Granddad and friends – ‘The MG’, as well as ‘Millicent’- a portrait of my Grandma and an early etching of mine – ‘Granddad’.

I’m excited to have recently found out that ‘The MG’ has also been shortlisted for the Holt Festival – Sir John Hurt Art Prize exhibition, 24th -31st July! A great selection of works by local artists will be on show and the prize will be announced by Lady Anwen Hurt on Sunday the 23rd of July!

I’m also taking part in the 22nd (my 5th) Norwich Print Fair from the 4th – 16th of September. For this I’ve been working on some new prints based on ‘the hand-made’ and so far have produced some portraits of volunteers at the John Jarrold Printing Museum. Below are two new prints that are a combination of etching and collagraph, ‘Bill’ and ‘Jerry’.

I’m still waiting to hear if I have got into the Woolwich Print Fair in London, 20th – 23rd October… Watch this space!

New etching – ‘The MG’

26 Apr

I have now completed a larger etching of my Granddad and friends admiring an MG in the 1930s. It is part of the same series of work, but I have experimented further with mark-making in the soft ground and used a mezzotint burnisher to add highlights and reduce the cotton texture in some areas.

I also decided to print in a colour blend, rather that the usual black and white and am really pleased with the effect this has. Colours used were Raw Umber (Lawrence intaglio ink) and Turquoise Lake (Intaglio Printmakers ink).

Print to the People: Etching Facilities update!!!!

16 Sep

We have been working hard over the summer to sort out our etching facilities at Print to the People! This Wednesday I spent time doing a test etching to check that it’s all in working order before the Introduction to Etching course on the 8th of October (http://printtothepeople.com/courses)

Up until now, there has been no where for people to access etching in Norwich and it’s been my dream since finishing university in 2010 to set up facilities for graduates, artists and enthusiasts to continue experimenting with this traditional printmaking technique.

For now, we will mainly be working with ferric chloride and copper and the maximum plate size that will fit in the etching tank is A3, however we do have larger trays as well.  We are also focussing on hard ground and soft ground as we are a bit limited for space, but we have an aquatint box in storage so watch this space!!!

If you interested in trying this technique check out the course info on the link above, or if you or some one you know has experience in etching then spread the word as you will be able to book an induction via intaglio@printtothepeople.com from October!

The Norwich Print Fair

16 Aug

I was asked just two weeks ago if I would like to take part in this year’s Norwich Print Fair, luckily I had already been busy producing a new series of work based on old family photos from the 1930s in Ireland! The first print in the series, ‘Granddad’, was produced while at NUA back in 2008 and last year I accompanied this with ‘Grandma’. However, I have a wonderful collection of old photos, many featuring old cars and various family members – all taken by an anonymous photographer – and I decided to produce a body of work to celebrate them!

Below is a sample of what will be on show at the exhibition… You can also buy selected works from my ETSY page https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/lwhiteprints?ref=hdr_shop_menu  or email me via slippersandhats@hotmail.com

The exhibition takes places at St Margaret’s Church on St Benedict’s St, Norwich from the 5th – 17th of September! Come along and support the local printmaking scene!!
