Time for a Mezzotint

16 Feb

WP_20150214_003 Just a quick up date to show the beginnings of a new project that will involve a series of intaglio prints including etching, drypoint and finally a new mezzotint! I will also continue to explore combining printmaking methods such as monoprint and etching.

I have taken a proof of my newly rocked plate and although you are not supposed to print a mezzotint too many times before the final result I want to be able to use the proofing process to demonstrate this long winded process and possibly exhibit it at its different stages later this year.

My new work is currently based around ‘tools of the trade’ and an artist’s organised mess so I will be using images that I took while assisting the late Aidan Kirkpatrick in his workshop and also intend to visit various workshops and studios to draw further inspiration. Watch this space and thanks for reading! L

20 Nov

There are two leisure courses in printmaking starting up again at Wensum Lodge ( King Street, Norwich ) from the 5th of January 2015! This includes the new course ‘INTAGLIO FOR BEGINNERS’ which started up this term and has been a great success (see images below of some of the prints produced!)

LINK (Just type PRINTMAKING into the key word search and check how many places are left)

You can enrol online or by calling this number 0344 800 8020

Focussing on engraving and etching techniques, this course offers the opportunity to develop your drawing skills in to print.  You will be using drypoint tools to engrave rhenalon and aluminium and also shown various techniques using environmentally friendly methods of printing.  Not only this, you can also try both hard ground and soft ground etching on zinc – a more complicated process but with professional and saleable results!

The course takes place on Monday evenings between 6 and 8pm and will run for 11 weeks! This course filled up quickly last time so make sure you enrol soon! (It could even be a great Christmas present?!)

An opportunity to try four different printmaking methods including monoprint, lino cut, collagraph and drypoint, this course is a great introduction to various techniques and processes.  It is perfect for both complete beginners as well as those who already have some experience!  You can take advantage of the facilities and develop your own style and way of working with the support of the tutor (me) and others in the group!

The course takes place on Tuesday afternoons between 3 and 5 pm and also runs for 11 weeks! Make sure you sign up as there are some regulars who come back every term so places fill up super quick!

Intaglio Update and Course Information (January 2015!)

29 Oct

The Printmaking courses at Wensum Lodge are well under way and gladly they are all running!

I mainly want to update about the new course, ‘Intaglio for Beginners’ which is now half way through.  So far we’ve covered drypoint on rhenalon and aluminium and looked at different ways of inking up using soya and oil based inks.  With a full group of ten its a bit of a squeeze in the print room but I have to say that some of the prints the group have produced so far are really great!

After half term I will be introducing the group to etching. They’ll be using copper sulphate to produce etchings on zinc, starting with a hard ground for the initial drawing and then moving on to try soft ground to add texture or tone! I decided to use copper sulphate for the beginners as it is much less toxic than using acid and has a relatively quick biting time. This Monday I produced an example and was surprised to find that it only took about 15 minutes to get a decent etch!

For my own work I usually use ferric chloride with copper plates as they give a much finer result, however I do really like the coarse line that can be created with zinc.  Below are some images of my plate from this week, i’ll update again soon once it has been printed!

If your interested in this 12 week course you will be able to enrol for next term pretty soon.  Keep an eye on this link:  http://www.norfolk.gov.uk/Leisure_and_culture/Adult_education/index.htm  Just type ‘printmaking’ into the key word box and the current courses and information will come up!  There’s also the ‘Printmaking for Beginners’ course starting up again in January too!

Art Car Boot Fair

13 Jun

Amongst other things I’ve been super busy getting ready for a new event taking place in Norwich this Sunday! The Art Car Boot Sale is taking place at Redwell Brewery, just under the bridge towards Trowse. There will be many local artists selling their goods along with local beer, food and music so spread the word!

I’ve been busy hand printing some of my lino designs onto tote bags using my own ‘Little Blue Press’ and have been using my garden shed as a studio space! I’ll have some new work on sale as well as most of the prints featured in my ‘portfolio’!

Spread the word, share the link and see you there!
