New etching – ‘The MG’

I have now completed a larger etching of my Granddad and friends admiring an MG in the 1930s. It is part of the same series of work, but I have experimented further with mark-making in the soft ground and used a mezzotint burnisher to add highlights and reduce the cotton texture in some areas.

I also decided to print in a colour blend, rather that the usual black and white and am really pleased with the effect this has. Colours used were Raw Umber (Lawrence intaglio ink) and Turquoise Lake (Intaglio Printmakers ink).

Latest Work and News!

Admittedly I have had my usual lull between September and January in terms of doing my own art work! I am now teaching two leisure courses in Lino Printing for Beginners and a level 1 and level 2 NCFE in craft: Printmaking  at Wensum Lodge in Norwich. I am also a sessional tutor at City College and teach on the Art Foundation course on Tuesday afternoons.

Wednesdays, however, are still my day at Print to the People and during the quiet (and cold) winter months I have been working on a new etching of my Granddad and friends admiring an old MG in the 1930s.

Shortly after starting this plate I was sent the usual email asking to show interest in taking part in this year’s Norwich Print Fair. At the time I had only done the initial hard ground line drawing but I sent this in and have been offered a place in the exhibition again in September!

Below are more images of my plate in progress and what I have done at each stage…

  1. The hard ground line drawing. Etched in Ferric chloride for 1 hour (it takes longer in the cold!)

2. First soft ground. Ran through press with a piece of cotton across the whole surface. White areas stopped out and additional lines added for a soft tone – these were drawn through tracing paper to give a more pencil like line when etched. Etched in weaker solution for 6-8 minutes.

3. Second soft ground etch. Focusing on the tree. Used an edge of mount card and scrunched up tissue to create random marks for the leaves (rather than drawing them individually!) Also re drew softer lines to create a darker tone on figures and the car.

4. Proof 2 and proof 3. Planning to burnish a ‘horizon’ and get rid of random marks in background. Might do one more etch but i’m pleased with the latest print…(white patches are where I tried to use whiting powder to lighten the background but it didn’t work well over the soft ground texture so going to burnish instead.)

I’m aiming to have this print ready to exhibit in the Royal Norfolk Show in July alongside two other works. I sold both A Grand Day Out and A Grand Day Out #2 there last year, so I have been asked to submit 3 pieces this time!

Print to the People: Etching Facilities update!!!!

We have been working hard over the summer to sort out our etching facilities at Print to the People! This Wednesday I spent time doing a test etching to check that it’s all in working order before the Introduction to Etching course on the 8th of October (http://printtothepeople.com/courses)

Up until now, there has been no where for people to access etching in Norwich and it’s been my dream since finishing university in 2010 to set up facilities for graduates, artists and enthusiasts to continue experimenting with this traditional printmaking technique.

For now, we will mainly be working with ferric chloride and copper and the maximum plate size that will fit in the etching tank is A3, however we do have larger trays as well.  We are also focussing on hard ground and soft ground as we are a bit limited for space, but we have an aquatint box in storage so watch this space!!!

Hand-made etched pendants £25 each

I recently tried my hand at making etched copper pendants!!

The copper was kindly cut up and drilled at Men’s Shed, across from Print to the People, I then filed and burnished the edges of each plate, applied a soft ground and played around with different textures to make each pendant different.

I’ve been busy!

I have been really slack at updating my blog lately, but just wanted to show what I have been doing so far this year, on top of teaching and planning new and exciting things at Print to the People (watch this space! http://printtothepeople.com/home)

I have been working on four new etchings, two of which will be on show at this years Norfolk Show. I am working on two copper etchings that will accompany ‘Aidan’s Studio’, these are of closer studies of his workshop and are a combination of hard and soft ground etching techniques. I’ve also just finished two zinc etchings that are part of a new ongoing series of work based on old photos of family in Ireland in the 1930s.

‘A Grand Day Out’ and ‘A Grand Day Out #2’  are now available to buy:£70 mounted, £90 framed – i’ll put them in my portfolio and will also try to get my Etsy shop going again…

Time for a Mezzotint

WP_20150214_003 Just a quick up date to show the beginnings of a new project that will involve a series of intaglio prints including etching, drypoint and finally a new mezzotint! I will also continue to explore combining printmaking methods such as monoprint and etching.

I have taken a proof of my newly rocked plate and although you are not supposed to print a mezzotint too many times before the final result I want to be able to use the proofing process to demonstrate this long winded process and possibly exhibit it at its different stages later this year.

My new work is currently based around ‘tools of the trade’ and an artist’s organised mess so I will be using images that I took while assisting the late Aidan Kirkpatrick in his workshop and also intend to visit various workshops and studios to draw further inspiration.
