I’ve been busy!

20 May

I have been really slack at updating my blog lately, but just wanted to show what I have been doing so far this year, on top of teaching and planning new and exciting things at Print to the People (watch this space! http://printtothepeople.com/home)

I have been working on four new etchings, two of which will be on show at this years Norfolk Show. I am working on two copper etchings that will accompany ‘Aidan’s Studio’, these are of closer studies of his workshop and are a combination of hard and soft ground etching techniques. I’ve also just finished two zinc etchings that are part of a new ongoing series of work based on old photos of family in Ireland in the 1930s.

‘A Grand Day Out’ and ‘A Grand Day Out #2’  are now available to buy:£70 mounted, £90 framed – i’ll put them in my portfolio and will also try to get my Etsy shop going again…

Monoprint/Etching experiments

18 Aug

I have recently started experimenting with the idea of the ‘multiple’ by playing around with an old etching and printing over the top of monoprints.  I bought myself a beautiful book called ‘Wildlife in Printmaking’ and came across some amazing monoprints which inspired me to consider using this technique more in my own work.

There are six main methods of monoprinting, some of which are more controlled, but on the whole the great (or perhaps frustrating) thing is that you never quite know what you’re going to get!

Different methods:

1. Positive – Rolling out a thin layer of ink, placing your paper onto the ink and drawing directly onto the back

2. Negative – After taking your positive print, place a new piece of paper onto the ink and rub.  This should pick up the negative marks.

3. Stencil – Using shapes to block areas of the rolled out ink. Also can be flipped over and double printed/layered.

4. Painterly – Painting the ink onto surface using different brushes and tools, laying the paper down and rubbing the back.

5. Reductive – Rolling out the ink and then using different tools e.g. pallet knife or end of a paintbrush to remove ink and make different marks before laying paper over and rubbing.

6. Found objects – Using materials, fabrics, bubble wrap, sand, folded paper etc to take ink away.  Then perhaps flip the materials over to pick up ink from the different textures.

Below are some of the examples of my experiments using stencils for my monoprints.  As you can see they come out quite differently each time!

Ready to Teach!

30 Oct

It’s come around really quickly but I am so excited to officially start teaching the Printmaking courses at Wensum Lodge after half term! I’ve been doing my technician hours and followed Gini Hanbury while she started up the Beginners, Level 2 and Level 3 courses.  Gini has given me loads of support and i’m thrilled to have this opportunity while she goes away to India for 5 months!! It’s my first teaching job but I am well prepared and will be starting off teaching ‘Intaglio’ – Drypoint – so I will be able to show some of my own work as examples and share the techniques I have been practising over the last few years.  Gini has given me such a great opportunity to start my teaching career and I wish her a safe and eye opening journey to India and beyond!

Always a good look!
