‘Mezzotype’ – New mezzotint completed!

17 Aug

It’s done!! I finished proofing the mezzotint I’ve been working on last week and also made a collagraph plate to print the block of text in the foreground.  I’m really excited about this new print, not just because it’s finished, but because of how well the two plates have worked together. I managed to make the collagraph thin enough so that it could sit on the surface of the mezzotint and be printed at the same time! This has saved time because I originally planned to stencil out the area and then print a lino cut in the space but this way makes it more integrated as an image and because it has been embossed it works better as an intaglio-relief combination!

'Mezzotype' £220 (unframed)

I’ll be taking this down to the framers today in preparation for the 20th Norwich Print Fair which takes place at St Margaret’s Church, St Benedict’s St, Norwich from Mon 7th – Sat 19th September!   http://www.norwichprintfair.co.uk/

Little John Etching Press!!!

6 Apr

So… the exciting news is that I now have my own etching press, that is to say that I am eternally grateful to Aidan’s wife, Frances, for allowing me to pay for it bit by bit…  Although Aidan’s family tried a bit of etching in their time, they were not going to take it up themselves, so Frances asked me to clear the printing equipment from the Forge as she is planning to rent it out as another studio or office.

When I offered to buy the etching press, Frances’s main concern was where i’d put it as I don’t have my own studio and can hardly put it in the shed as it would just rust away! However… I have been hoping to get involved with Print to the People for some time and as they were due to move into new premises they were more than happy for me to keep the press there and get involved with running workshops, events and open access time!

So here it is! With help from Jo Stafford, her van man and Martin Mitchell we collected the press last week and Martin has been helping me to restore it by cleaning the cogs, WD40ing, wire brushing and painting with hammorite (to match my other press!) The press still needs putting back together but hopefully it’ll be up and running by Print to the People’s opening launch this Saturday!!!! Check out the link!! http://www.printtothepeople.com/

Print to the People are an artist led organisation that was started up in Norwich by two super keen screen printmakers, Jo Stafford and Vicky Johnson back in 2009.  They provide facilities and workshops on a pay as you go basis, giving the people of Norwich and beyond the chance to develop their printing techniques either as complete beginners, recent graduates or experienced fanatics!

Up until recently the organisation, ‘STEW’, was based on Fishergate and primarily focused on paper and textile screen printing. However, they will very soon be moving to new premises on Pitt Street where they will be offering a wider range of printmaking facilities and events including relief printing, letterpress with Paul McNeill and also I will be getting involved to provide intaglio!

Check out the website and look out for upcoming events! I’ll keep you poste on here too!
